Sacrament of Holy wedlock

The groom, best man, and ushers take their place at the front of the altar, and the bride and her procession process in from the back of the church, or place where the service will be held. The servers and clergy follow.

Celebrant: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God,  and in the face of our brothers and sisters, to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony, which is an honorable estate, not by any to be taken in hand unadvisedly, lightly or wantonly, but reverently, discreetly, advisedly and soberly, in the sight of God. If anyone has any objection to this marriage or wants to raise any legal doubts based on sober reasons why this marriage should not take place, let him speak now or forever hold their peace.

My dear friends, you have come into this church so the Lord may seal and strengthen your love in the presence of all who are gathered here for this occasion. Our Lord Jesus abundantly blesses this love. He has already consecrated you in baptism and now he enriches and strengthens you by a special sacrament so that you may assume the duties of marriage in mutual and lasting fidelity.

And so, in the Presence of the Lord Jesus Christ and all who are gathered here, please state your intentions.

(The Priest asked each of them these questions)

  1.  First Names: N and N., have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage

  2.  Couple: Yes

  3.  Celebrant: Will you love, honor, respect and support each other as man and wife for the rest of your lives?

  4.  Couple:  We will.

  5.  Celebrant:  If it is God’s will to bless you with children, will you in mutual agreement accept them lovingly as gifts from God and bring them up – to the best of your ability – according to the law of Christ and his church?

  6.  Couple:  We will.

  7. Celebrant:  N—-do you take N. to be your wife? Do you promise to be true to her in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love her and honor her all the days of your life?

Groom: With God’s help, I do.

Celebrant: N—-do you take N. to be your husband? Do you promise to be true to him in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, and to love him and honor him all the days of your life?

Bride: With God’s help, I do.

The bridegroom places the two rings upon a salver held before him by an Acolyte.

The Priest sprinkles them with holy water, and makes the sign of the cross over them, saying—-Celebrant: Bless O Lord, ++ and hallow ++ these rings, that they who shall wear them may ever keep true faith to their partner in marriage, abiding in Your peace and in conformity to your Holy will and to live with each other in love unchanging, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Priest joins the right hands of the couple together

Celebrant: Receive the precious gift from God.

Celebrant: Please repeat after me:

I., N., take you, N., to be my wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, to cherish and to honor, and thereunto, in the presence of  God, I plight you my troth. Amen.

Groom: (placing a ring on bride’s finger) – In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. With this ring I thee wed; my truest love I pledge; with my body, I will give you reverence, and with all my heart I will love you. With this ring I thee wed. Amen.

Bride: (placing the ring on Grooms’s finger) – In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. With this ring I thee wed; my truest love I pledge; with my body, I will give you reverence, and with all my heart I will love you. With this ring I thee wed. Amen.

Celebrant: I join you together in marriage, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Covering the newlywed’s joined hands together with the end of his stole, the priest says Those who God has joined together let no one put asunder.

The Declaration

For as much as N and N., have consented together in holy wedlock and have witnessed the same before God and this company and thereto have given and pledged their troth each on to the other and have declared the same by giving and receiving of a ring and by joining of hands, I declare to you that they are man and wife together in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(If the ceremony is combined with the Mass, the service continues with the reading of scripture. See page (5)

After the Mass has ended and prior to the final blessing of the congregation the priest blesses the newlyweds.

Celebrant: Eternal God, give your blessings to these your servants, this man, and this woman, whom I bless in your name. Strengthen them that they may keep the vows and the covenant made to each other before almighty God.

May our Heavenly Father, pour upon you the riches of his love, sanctify you and +++ bless you, that you may serve Him both in body and soul, and that you may live together in holy love unto the end of your lives. Amen.
